Andy Murray could have lots to celebrate in the next couple of weeks after reaching the final of the Australian Open – just two weeks before his first child with wife Kim Sears is due. The tennis champion will compete against reigning champion Novak Djokovic in the final on Sunday, after beating Milos Raonic in the semi-final.

It is the fifth time that Andy has reached the finals of the prestigious tennis tournament, and is set to be an extra special feat this time around following the news that his brother Jamie has also reached the finals in the men’s doubles event.

The Murray siblings have become the first brothers in the Open era to reach the finals in both the men’s singles and doubles events at a Grand Slam, and Andy told reporters that his parents would be “extremely proud” of what they had achieved.

“Both my parents will be extremely proud. Not many tennis players come out of Scotland,” Andy said. “I never expected to be doing this. For us both to be in a slam final at the same time is pretty incredible. Hopefully he can win tomorrow night.”

Andy had previously revealed that he would drop out of the tournament to be by Kim’s side should she go into premature labour, after revealing that her due date falls just a couple of weeks after the tournament.

Andy’s wife Kim Sears is due to give birth in mid-February

“I’d go home. For sure, yes,” Andy told Daily Mail. “It’s obviously important. I want to make sure at the beginning I am there as much as I can be to try and help out, just be there for whatever is really required of me.”

The 28-year-old added that he was excited about becoming a father, and thinks it will be a good distraction from his tennis career.

“It’s going to be life changing when the baby comes but I am excited about that. People have asked ‘Do you think it will be a distraction?’ It might be but it’s a good distraction,” he said. “It’s actually not good to be just concentrating on tennis and your training all of the time.”
